Nokia Store Not to Allow New Symbian and Meego App from 1st Jan 2014

Time has finally come for Symbian. Nokia has recently sent a mail to all app developers about new development on Symbian and Meego. In the mail, its written that after 1st Jan, 2014, Nokia Store will not allow any new Symbian and/or Meego application or updates to existing application.

Users will still be able to download the applications but no new application will see the Nokia Store after 1st Jan, 2014. You may see some development from publishers and they may provide direct links of apps from their websites. Nokia has finally put a brake on Symbian. This is very disappointing news for millions of Symbian users. Heres the email-

Dear Nokia Developer,

With the growing business opportunities available on the Asha and Windows Phone platforms, we have been reviewing our developer content programs to see how we can maximize our support to you, our developers. As a result of this review, we have decided to focus our support and investment in new content toward Asha and Windows Phone. Over the next few months we will be transitioning our active developer support away from Symbian and MeeGo.

If you have Symbian and MeeGo content in the Nokia Store, it will continue to be available for download to customers, and you will continue to receive download and revenue reports as well as payouts for downloaded content. However, starting January 1, 2014, you will no longer be able to publish any new content or update existing content for Symbian and MeeGo.

We are very excited about the opportunities available with Asha and Windows Phone, and hope that you will bring your talents to these platforms. We believe that these changes will help improve our ability to support you as you develop fantastic apps for your customers.

It is clear from mail that Nokia is now focusing on Asha and Windows Phone platform. Symbian and Meego is of least to no importance.

Instantly zap links maps and phone numbers to your Android phone with Chrome to Phone!

The new Chrome to Phone extension adds a button to your Google Chrome browser that instantly sends the current web page, map, YouTube video, or selected phone number or text to your Android device running Froyo (or Android 2.2).

Suppose youre reading an interesting article on your favorite news website and need to leave for an urgent appointment. Simply click the extension icon in your browser to send the link to your phone and the devices browser will automatically open the link, ready for you to view on the go. Chrome to Phone also works seamlessly with Google Maps. Say you’ve looked up an address or driving directions on your desktop. Clicking the extension icon in your browser will push the information to the Google Maps app on your phone. YouTube videos work the same way with the extension. You can also select a phone number on a web page and send it to the dialer on your phone. Selected text can also be automatically copied from your browser and sent to your Android clipboard for later viewing.



The Chrome to Phone extension is available in English for now, but we hope to expand to other languages soon. Check out the help center if you have further questions. iPhone 6 to feature solar charging sapphire glass screen Report

Apple, a tech firm best known for its innovations, after introducing a fingerprint sensor in its iPhone 5s, is rumoured to be integrating solar panels into the sapphire glass screen on its next iPhone.

Matt Margolis, an analyst writing for Seeking Alpha, expects the solar-charging sapphire glass screen to be incorporated in the Apple iPhone 6, aimed at enhancing the battery life of the handset, the problem that is plaguing all smartphones.

Margolis concludes that the Sapphire Glass screen will be embedded with solar cells in the Apples new plant placed in Arizona. To support this news, Margolis gives an account of several events and patents over the past year.

It has been mentioned that Apple filed a patent back in February 2013 which included the use of touch sensors and solar panel. The patent however, failed to mention how the technology works in detail. A follow-up patent made it clearer, mentioning that the touch screen panel included a power management system that takes power from solar panels.

The firms opening for the post of Thin Films Engineer with solar experience further confirmed the news followed by Apples new manufacturing unit opened in Arizona in partnership with mineral crystal specialist GT Advanced Technologies Inc.

Apple also announced that it would spend $10.5 billion in capital expenditures, including "cutting edge lasers" that are being speculated to be used for "scribing" the microchannels on solar cells. An order of $68 million for solar cell coating equipment from Manz AG is also being attributed to either Apple or Samsung.

A recent report by PhoneArena states that Foxconn, a major manufacturer for several Apple products, has reportedly assembled 100 iPhone prototypes including with a sapphire glass screen. The firm is said to rely on two companies for its sapphire material which are responsible in providing material for the iPhone 5s rear camera and TouchID Sensor- Synopsys and Bern Optics.

With the patents, GT Advanced Technologies partnership and Foxconn prototype rumours, Apple is quite likely to use sapphire and solar charging in its devices in future, and one can expect the next iPhone or iWatch to come with the same in or around September-October 2014.

Workday plans analytics push as PRISM fails to stop cloud use

The chief technology officer (CTO) of HR cloud provider Workday has said many IT chiefs appear unconcerned by government snooping and still see the cloud as vital to their enterprise software needs.
Speaking to V3, Annrai O’Toole said that while the PRISM revelations have certainly put data security and privacy back in the spotlight, it has not changed the market for most IT chiefs – a sentiment echoed by Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff earlier this week.

“I don’t get the sense that CIOs are concerned about governments snooping on their data,” he said. “I think people are more concerned with making sure that they do things to make it very difficult for people, whoever they are, to look at their data.”

On this point, O’Toole said the global nature of data security and protection means many firms still see a dedicated cloud provider as a better means of keeping data secure.

“It doesn’t change what you need to worry about. If you have all your information on premise but it can be accessed across the world, then you’re into all sorts of data-protection regulations and making sure you apply the right policies,” he said.

“I think more and more people are realising they have these issues and vendors like Workday can do a good job as we put a lot of investment into being up to date with these regulations.”

As part of the ongoing push around its products and providing benefits to customers, the IT chief said pushing more analytical capabilities into Workday is high on the agenda for the next year.

"I think a big part of the whole cloud story is analytics. For me cloud itself isn’t so important, it’s the outcomes that it engenders. These are driven by analytics, which is allied to cloud computing, but it’s much bigger,’ he said.

Google hires ear piece clad security officers to guard company buses in San Francisco

Google has been the subject of some protesting ire in San Francisco in recent times, something that resulted in one company bus being vandalized via slashed tires and a rock being thrown through a window. It seems the tech giant has responded to this in the form of bus stop-located security guards, which keep roost at employees bus stop in San Franciscos Mission District area, and possibly others.

Google has declined commenting on the matter, but reports have surfaced regarding men wearing plain clothes and ear pieces standing at one of the bus stops where Google employees board the company shuttle. These individuals reportedly dont board the shuttle, but instead remain present as the other company buses show up.

Witnesses have reported seeing one bus driver wave to one of the individuals, receiving a wave back, and another has been seen writing notes on a yellow pad. The men were approached and asked if they are security guards for Google, at which point one requested to see the askers badge, and the other said no, though would not say who he was or where he worked.

It wouldnt be surprising to find Google has send out security detail at bus stops in light of the protests that have taken place in the city. In a statement to Reuters, the executive director of Corporate Security Services Inc., Ron Roth, said: "If they are having security at the bus stops it’s probably only eyes and ears, and to act as liaison to the police, and probably not to take any action."SlashGear

App Engine SDK 1 3 1 Including Major Improvements to Datastore!

We are excited to announce the release of version 1.3.1 of the App Engine SDK for both Python and Java. While this release contains plenty of new features and fixes, weve concentrated on using our very first SDK release of 2010 to improve the heart of many App Engine applications: the Datastore.



Here are the three major improvements that 1.3.1 has in store for datastore users:

• Datastore Query Cursors - Cursors allow applications to save and bookmark their progress through a query, so that it can be resumed later. This works great in combination with paging URLs, as well as processing in the Task Queue API, but there are many other uses. Watch for an upcoming blog post that explores Cursors in the near future. Theyre also really handy in the context of the next change...
• No more 1000 result limit - Thats right: with addition of Cursors and the culmination of many smaller Datastore stability and performance improvements over the last few months, were now confident enough to remove the maximum result limit altogether. Whether youre doing a fetch, iterating, or using a Cursor, theres no limits on the number of results.
• Reduced error rate with Automatic Datastore Retries - Weve heard a lot of feedback that you dont want to deal with the Datastores sporadic errors. In response, App Engine now automatically retries all datastore calls (with the exception of transaction commits) when your applications encounters a datastore error caused by being unable to reach Bigtable. Datastore retries automatically builds in what many of you have been doing in your code already, and our tests have shown it drastically reduces the number of errors your application experiences (by up to 3-4x error reduction for puts, 10-30x for gets).
  

But even with our focus on the Datastore, we were able to sneak in a quite a number of other new goodies into 1.3.1 as well:



For Python, weve included the AppStats RPC instrumentation library. AppStats lets users easily profile the performance of calls from their app to the App Engine backend services to identify and isolate issues such as ineffective caching, bottlenecks, and redundant RPC calls in their app. (A Java version is in beta testing now.)



And for Java, weve included a comprehensive new unit-testing framework for your App Engine apps. The unit-testing framework enables you to test your application code in a natural, fully supported manner, and also allows you to integrate your App Engine apps into other existing testing and automation frameworks.



The list of changes in 1.3.1 goes on and on (Custom Admin Console pages! Support for wildcard domain mappings! Java precompilation on by default for all applications!), so make sure to download the new version and read our release notes for the complete list (Python, Java).

Gaming exoskeleton to pair with Oculus Rift headset at CES 2014

  LAS VEGAS -- The future of gaming, at least to those banking on the rise of virtual reality, lies not just with better graphics or voice control, but with sensor suits and headsets that bring our real-world movements to life onscreen. At CES 2014, the PrioVR full-body tracking suit is on display and the company behind it, YEI Technology, is partnering with VR headset maker Oculus Rift to showoff a fully immersive gaming experience later this week.

Sailing toward the far-off sci-fi future of those powered exoskeletons in "The Matrix" or the video game series Crysis, the PrioVR hardware is a string of strap-on sensors extensive enough to make anyone look like an actor in a motion capture studio. Its half-body system includes sensors for a users head, elbows, and wrists that can be expanded into a full-body suit that tracks ones shoulder, waist and leg movements.

"That allows you to drop on the ground, roll around, shoot under your leg, curl up into a fetal position," said Paul Yost, YEIs chief of R&D. "We have this collection of inertial sensors that combines with a software that ties all that together into this skeletal model. All that happens on the system itself, so theres no computational load on the PC other than the communication."

Combined with that software are API plug-ins, Yost pointed out, that are compatible with all major gaming engines, allowing developers to drop the suit support into into any application with relative ease. PCs are the starting point, but YEI hopes to expand to consoles as well.

As far as movement goes, players wield a nunchuk-like controller similar to that of the original Wii to navigate the game environment and utilize both hands and his or her upper body to make more nuanced movements. On the floor at CES, a user strapped into the half-body PrioVR prototype played a first-person shooter demo, shifting in his chair to peek out of corners and furiously angling a virtual weapon with his hands.

While this iteration of the PrioVR is new, YEIs attempts to jump into the VR market trace back to last fall. PrioVR originally launched on Kickstarter last September, where it racked up an impressive $111,000 but failed to meet its $225,000 goal.

How to Keep Strangers From Emailing You Via Google

We are not sure how many times you have wanted to email someone but didn’t have their email address. We also don’t know if that person you wanted to email was on Google+, and you knew that but still didn’t have their email address. So to fix that problem, Google has updated Gmail, adding a couple features to both mobile and PC versions. This may be old news to you but one of which, is the ability to send emails from your Gmail, to anyone in your G+ circles. The thing is, this means anyone can just add you to their circles, and then send you an email, without having to know your email address. Well there’s a fix for that, if you want it.

The added feature seems to be a great one, unless you are the type who doesn’t like to have complete strangers coming to you for whatever reason and fill your inbox. If that doesn’t bother you, than it works great so you won’t have to ask someone for their email address and wait for a response, instead you can just email them and wait for a response. that the feature would receive mixed feelings from users of both Gmail or G+ or both, Google gave options, just another one of the many reasons we love Google.

If you don’t want to use this feature or want to customize it to an extent, just go into your Gmail account, get into your settings menu and stay in the “General” tab. Look through the options and you will find there is a new section called “Email via Google+”. That’s where you will find that you can select exactly who can email you using your G+ account.

The options vary as you might be used to if you have messed with your G+ settings, or even put a G+ account together. The available selections are: No One, Circles, Extended Circles, or Anyone on Google+. So see people who may have been worried about their fragile Gmail inbox, there is hope for you yet. We have already asked what you think about this new feature, but with the newly discovered settings option, has your feelings changed? Or do you still feel the same?

The Batman-themed Nokia Lumia 900 was announced just yesterday and there were rumors well see its market release in a couple of weeks, but Phones4U begs to differ.



The UK retailer has posted more information on the limited edition Lumia 900, announcing its going to offer the smartphone exclusively across the United Kingdom. In fact, the phone itself is going to be super exclusive as only 900 units will ever be put into production.

Furthermore, the Batman Lumia 900 phones will come with a Dark Knight Rises app preinstalled, which gives you access to wallpapers, ringtones and a special "Claim Gothamm City" challenge that gives you Foursquare bonuses each time you check in at the specially designated places.

It is of course available on numerous contracts and plans, but if committing to a carrier long-term isnt your thing the limited edition Lumia 900 will set you back £600. As a bonus, the happy owners will receive free tickets to the Dark Knight Rises movie premiere when it hits the cinemas on July 20.

Deliveries of the smartphone will start June 1st and the device is already up for pre-order, so you can already book your place in line.
