Canon PowerShot SD 880 IS

At 6.3 ounces and measuring 3.7 inches wide by 2.2 inches high by 0.9 inch deep, itll fit more comfortably in a pants or coat pocket than a shirt pocket, but its by no means big. Compared with the SD870 IS, the SD880 IS has the latest version of Canons image processing engine, Digic 4, jumps from 8 megapixels to 10, and offers a few more scene modes.

The 4x f2.8-5.8 28-112mm lens is a highlight of the camera the wide angle is so nice to have on a camera this small, and its a tad longer zoom than on the SD870. It also records video using the H.264 codec instead of Motion JPEG. On top of the two tone body (its available in gold or brown and silver or black combinations) are the shutter button and surrounding zoom control, a small power button, and a switch for going between Video, Special Scene modes (SCN), and Shooting mode in Auto or Program AE.

That mosaic like design on the right is the speaker. Scene modes are plentiful 16 in all and include Stitch Assist for panoramas and Underwater for use with an optional casing.

Shooting mode lets you go fully automatic with some minor adjustments, or drop it into Program AE, which gives you control for exposure compensation, white balance, tone, and ISO.

Following the bodys curve on the right from top to bottom are Print or Share and Playback buttons, a directional pad surrounded by a thumb dial, and then Menu and Display buttons.

At first glance it looks like theres a lot going on with the controls, and there actually is, but operation remains reliably straightforward. The directional pad is pretty standard instead its the thumb dial that adds interest here. In SCN mode, the dial is used for rifling through your options. Its also used for swapping between Auto and Program in Shooting mode and tone control in Video.

It works well, but you can barely feel stops when spinning the dial making it just a little too easy to switch out of whichever mode you want. The dial can be used for navigating Menu settings, too. Overall, I like the key design and wheel, but I can also see it confusing new users to the point of frustration.

The film chronicles the months from April through June 2009, and is produced with the full support of the Estate of Michael Jackson and drawn from more than one hundred hours of behind-the-scenes footage, featuring Michael rehearsing a number of his songs for the show.

Audiences will be given a look at Jackson as he has never been seen before. In raw and candid detail, Michael Jacksons This Is It captures the singer, dancer, filmmaker, architect, creative genius and great artist at work as he creates and perfects his final show.

Kenny Ortega, who was Michael Jacksons creative partner and the director of the stage show is also directing the film, which is being produced by Randy Phillips, Kenny Ortega and Paul Gongaware. The executive producers are John Branca and John McClain. The film will be distributed worldwide by Sony Pictures Releasing. Tickets for the limited two-week engagement of the film went on sale September 27, 2009. The release date is October 28, 2009.

WTF is this iPad Air thing

Apple fans, you better duck. Im taking aim. And you know whats coming. iPad Air? iPad Mini with Retina display? Is that it?!
OK, Ill admit it - I will probably get one. But before you call me a hypocrite, hear me out. The fact is, Ill probably end up taking it back, too, thanks to that 14-day returns period.

Lets be honest here. Apple seems to have lost the plot. I watched the announcement like everyone else, waiting for a shooting star to appear on stage. Instead, I got the splatter of a wet lettuce - albeit one thats significantly lighter with a smaller bezel.

Circle of strife

Ill give Apple its dues - the iPad Air is a great step forward. But look at what it is replacing - the iPad 4, which was not much different to the iPad 3. There is nothing really innovative here.
Yeah, the bezel has been slimmed. Yay! Its lighter. Whoop!
But it still cant do the laundry or make me a frickin cup of tea, can it? Can it?

The first iPad was a revolutionary product. It may have initially been derided as a large iPod Touch, but it set the tone. Ill give Apple that.
And the second iPad was pretty damn pleasant too - because it changed the dimensions of what we already had. But the thing is, right from iPad 1, theres been another strategy Apples been working on... and that is to only give 90%, dressing it up as one hundred. To always keep something back.

Holding back

"For the last two iterations, weve got little improvements and now, were told something lighter will make it all OK? Give me a break!"

 

What am I talking about? Hands up if you screamed, kicked, bit and threatened to torch the joint because the first iPad came without a camera. Why? It was such an obvious omission.
The theory was Cupertino was keeping that for iPad 2 to give us reason enough to upgrade. Then iPad 2 came along, a lot sexier with a camera, but packing a crap display at a time when Retina was just taking off. WTF Apple? Youre better than this.

And so, for the last two iterations, weve got little improvements and now, were told something lighter will make it all OK? Give me a break! And dont get me started on the missing Touch ID. What is that about? Clearly, its being kept for the next model, to give us extra incentive to upgrade next year.
You can see this strategy all over - the iPad Mini only just got a Retina display. Why? Why did it not launch with one 12 months ago?! Ill tell you why - because then there would have been nothing to set it apart for customers come October 2013.

This is an appalling strategy, smacking of desperation from a company that is anything but. And before you shoot me down telling me the specs are higher internally, remember that for many people who are sold on looks, thats insignificant.
A cuter design or a nicer screen will shift infinitely more units than the difference between an A1 chip and an A9000000 chip when youre pitching to someone asking "Does this thing do Facebook?"

Moto G Google Play Edition Is Here! 179 and 199 Respectively

Google just dropped another new device in the Play Store. Well it’s not really new. But the Moto G is now available on Google Play as a Google Play Edition device. What’s strange is that Google is calling this a Google Play Edition, but we’re left wondering what is actually different from the normal Moto G? Since the Moto G is basically stock Android, in fact I don’t think there’s any Motorola tweaks in the Moto G like there is in the Moto X.

The Moto G Google Play Edition is on sale now for $179 for the 8GB version and $199 for the 16GB version, which is the same price as it is at other retailers, like Best Buy, and Amazon, and even Motorola’s site. This is a pretty surprising move from Google. On the Play Store Google is describing it as “a 4.5″ HD display, quad-core speed, all-day battery, interchangeable backs and the latest version of Android from Google starting at less than $200.” Remember the Moto G is featuring the Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 1.2GHz quad-core processor, with quad-band HSPA+, so it’ll support T-Mobile and AT&T’s network. But it only supports HSPA+ 21mbps network, and not T-Mobile’s 42mbps. It’s also got a 4.5-inch 720p HD display. Along with Android 4.4 – KitKat, which it already had.

Now this puts just about every OEM with a Google Play Edition device. HTC, Samsung, LG, Sony, and now Motorola. So perhaps, this is one way that Google is helping manufacturers get the latest version of Android on their devices sooner? It’s rather strange, especially putting the Moto G as Google Play Edition. We’re going to have to check out the differences here, but it looks like the only difference is the wallpaper, so far. As updates do still come from Motorola.
